  5. Why Wait to See a Chiropractor Near You?

Could it be possible that chiropractic care is right for you,
but you have no idea what chiropractors do?

Therefore, you don’t go.

Like so many others, you may suffer for weeks, months, even
years from back pain, neck pain, headaches, and/or a myriad
of other aches and pains and still don’t venture into unknown
territory: a chiropractor’s office.

Trapped on the Medical Merry-Go-Round

Round and round you go with medical doctors, specialists, pain killers,
anti-inflammatories, steroid shots, massage, exercise, no exercise,
physical therapy, surgery, more doctors, more drugs, more therapy.

You name it, you’ve tried it, everything—except chiropractic.

And now you’re stranded. Left with no solution. Just questions. And a whole
lot of pain wreaking havoc on your life.

Why Wait While Continuing to Suffer?

As a chiropractor in practice for over 40 years, I still ask: why?

Why wait so long to see a chiropractor?
It’s possible, just possible that chiropractic care
could have
been the simple solution to your misery
all along? And maybe
still is?

Why not at least try it?

I address some of the “whys” in my article, “3 Guesses Why MDs
Still Refuse to Refer to Chiropractors,” should you be interested.

It’s about historical medical prejudices (why didn’t your MD refer
you to a chiropractor), big pharma, economics, politics, ignorance,
and fear sourced by a mix of hearsay, misconceptions, and truths.

For now, let’s start building a solid foundation of facts so you can
make an informed choice about receiving chiropractic care.

What’s Chiropractic?

As a licensed branch of health care, chiropractic is separate and
distinct from all other healthcare professions. It offers unique
services that no other health care provides.

Chiropractic focuses on the spine, misalignments of the spinal
bones (vertebrae), postural imbalances, and “locking up” or
restrictions in the joints between the vertebrae.

Chiropractic care also extends to other related areas of the
muscular skeletal system (muscles, bones, tendons, ligaments,
nerves, joints).

What’s a Chiropractor?

Education:

After earning my Bachelor of Science, I attended Sherman College
of Chiropractic for four more years to receive my Doctor of Chiropractic.

I graduated class valedictorian and Summa Cum Laude.

License:

To receive a license to practice, chiropractors must pass
all national and state boards. To maintain our licenses, every
year we must complete the required hours of continuing
education classes.

We also must stay in good standing with the state’s licensing
board and its rules and regulations.

Training:

By delivering “chiropractic adjustments,” chiropractors
correct the misalignments of the spinal bones, help to improve
postural imbalances, and initiate better movement between
the spinal bones.

Goal:

Relief of stiffness, aches, and lower back pain, middle back pain, neck pain,
headaches,
migraines, sacroiliac joint related pain, hip pain, leg pain, and other
muscular skeletal related pain, such as knees, shoulders, arms, elbows,
and feet.

Along with pain relief, chiropractic care may promote better
functioning in areas of the muscular skeletal system.

What Does Doc Martin Do?

Although all chiropractors have earned their Doctor of Chiropractic
and their licenses, as unique individuals, we differ in our procedures,
levels of expertise, experience, and methods used to deliver
chiropractic adjustments.

For differences between chiropractors, check out my article:
Chiropractors, Like Cats, Look Alike, Yet Are Distinctly Different!

Consultation:

In my office, first we sit down together and discuss you! You talk
about you and the reasons for your visit. For details and clarification,
I ask you important questions.

Can I Help You?
After this initial conversation, I typically
know whether I can help
you or not. If I don’t
think you’re a good candidate for chiropractic

care, I will let you know right away.

If I think I can help you, we will continue discussing your history,
major and minor complaints, my procedures, fees, concerns,
and questions.

Examination:

If you feel comfortable with going forward, I do a thorough spinal
examination (clothes remain on), explaining my findings as we go.

The Chiropractic Adjustment:

After the examination, if I continue to think you will improve under
my care and if you continue to feel comfortable with me, then I
begin the adjusting process.

While you remain comfortable, with my hands and
observation skills,
I slowly, systematically recheck
your entire spine both standing,
lying, and
sometimes sitting.
From your tailbone to the top bone in your neck (atlas),
located beneath your skull, I literally check and recheck
your entire spine many times.

As I check your spine, I stop to “adjust” those spinal bones and
related structures that require a chiropractic adjustment.

My adjusting instruments deliver very specific, painless thrusts,
designed to improve the position and movement of the spinal
structures for the purpose of restoring structural integrity to your
spine, thereby relieving pain and stiffness.

You’ll notice that I also check and adjust, if necessary, musculoskeletal
areas off, but related to, your spine: knees, hips, shoulders, jaws,
cranial (head) bones, and more as needed.

From the time we sit down together for the consultaton to your
last adjustment, we progress through the entire chiropractic experience
while I offer explanations all along the way.

Feeling is Understanding.

No matter how well a chiropractic adjustment is described,
you must actually feel a chiropractic adjustment, and its results,
to begin to understand it.

Even then, not all adjustments are alike. Some are delivered
by hand manipulation. Others are delivered with instruments.

I describe differences between chiropractors and adjustments
in this article: “Psst! A Not-So-Secret About Chiropractic Adjustments
That Chirpractors Hate to Tell”

Imagine . . . Life Without Pain.

Your caution, perhaps even fear, is understandable.

Maybe consider taking one step—a free consultation with
the chiropractor. No risk to you.

If you feel comfortable with the chiropractor and
what she says makes sense to you, consider taking
one more step.

You never know.

That first, bold step could open the door to a
life free
from back pain, neck pain, headaches,
and/or
other pain holding you back from living
your
life, filled with family, joy, and purpose.
